The second lady, I met during the Fayetteville weekend worked in the shoe department of a major high-end retailer. More out of curiosity than of purchasing, I went in seeking a pair of comfortable shoes for the Friday night concert. Surprisingly I found a very comfortable pair at a reasonable price; however, I noted the sale price and regular price were the same. The young lady who was to ring the purchase needed authorization to apply the correct sale price. The lady who came to authorize the reduction was amiable and helpful. When the transaction was completed, I thanked her and shared a brief affirmation. Almost immediately, her eyes watered. She came around the counter and shared she was told news earlier in the day that almost brought bitterness, even a questioning of God. Yet in spite of what seemed to be a pattern of disappointing challenges, she wanted to remain positive..
What resulted was about twenty minutes of sharing struggles. Much of which, I understood having experienced similar. After words of encouragement and affirmation, there followed tears of confidence and of expected victory over struggles. As on the previous night, there was a sense God had purposed this. I said to the lady here we thought this was about shoes, but maybe this was God's way of encouraging her to continue trusting Him and His providence, knowing ultimately her shoes could walk in extraordinary places for His sake.
In ordinary day-to-day situations, we may encounter opportunities to connect with others who are striving to remain faithful while confronting disappointments. Consider encouraging with a smile, a word, or an affirmation.
Affirmation: And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. Galatians 6:9
